It’s the start of a new era in Provo, Utah, as Brigham Young is trying to become the Notre Dame of the west as the Cougars being their first season as a football independent. The 2011 season could be a struggle as BYU has a loaded schedule, featuring games against Ole Miss, Texas, Utah, UCF, Oregon State and TCU. All eyes will be on the program to see whether they were right to branch off on their own and leaving the Mountain West behind. The Cougars are 150/1 on Bodog’s NCAA football odds to win the second national championship in school history.

BYU enters the year off a positive finish to the 2010 season. Freshman QB Jake Heaps struggled early in the year but led BYU to five wins in its past six games, including a blowout of UTEP in the New Mexico Bowl. Heaps, one of the nation’s top recruits, was the MVP of that game, going 25-of-34 for 264 yards and four touchdowns. Two of BYU’s other top offensive playmakers are also back. WR Cody Hoffman capped his freshman season with eight catches for 137 yards and three scores in the New Mexico Bowl, while running back Joshua Quezada had 101 yards against UTEP. Senior JJ Di Luigi led BYU in rushing last year with 917 yards on 178 carries and eight touchdowns and he’s back as well. The offense only loses one starter from 2010.

The defense brings back six starters. Coach Bronco Mendenhall took over the defense last October, firing his coordinator after five games. The Cougars improved steadily from that point. Redshirt junior middle linebacker Uona Kaveinga should be the star. He had to sit out last season after transferring from USC. The secondary is a question mark with three starters gone from last year, including All-MWC first-team selection Andrew Rich, who led BYU in tackles and interceptions.

The Cougars open their season Sept. 3 at Ole Miss.
