One of the most entertaining games of college football’s opening weekend should be this matchup between Southern Methodist and No. 8 Texas A&M, two of the better offensive teams in the country last season. The Aggies opened as 16.5-point favorites with the total at 55.5 on Bodog’s NCAA football odds.

The Mustangs finished last season at 7-7 and 6-2 in Conference USA, losing to Army in the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl.  The SMU offense should be dynamic again as quarterback Kyle Padron, top running back Zach Line and starting receiver Cole Beasley are all back, as is the entire offensive line. Padron threw for 3,828 yards and 31 touchdowns last year but did struggle at the end of the season, throwing four interceptions against three touchdowns in the C-USA championship game and the Armed Forces Bowl. Line rushed for 1,494 net yards in 2010, the second-highest total in a season by an SMU back. Beasley caught a team-high 87 passes last year for 1,046 yards.

Texas A&M is in the Top 10 in both major pre-season college football polls for the first time since 1999 off last year’s 9-4 record. The Aggies were beaten pretty solidly in the Cotton Bowl by LSU but managed to beat Oklahoma, Nebraska and Texas in 2010 during a six-game winning streak to close the regular season. A&M has a Heisman candidate in QB Ryan Tannehill, two top-notch running backs in Cyrus Gray and Christine Michael and one of the nation’s best receivers in Jeff Fuller. Last year Gray was the first Aggies back since 1993 to rush for more than 1,000 yards (1,133 yards, 5.7 per carry) and scored 12 times.

A&M was No. 20 in the nation in passing yards last season and averaged 31.2 points per game. SMU was No. 21 in the country in passing yards and averaged 25.7 ppg.
