New coach Al Golden is installing a new attitude with the Miami Hurricanes after UM flopped last season. The Hurricanes were preseason ACC favorites at Bodog but finished 7-6, including getting dominated in the Sun Bowl by Notre Dame. Coach Randy Shannon was fired after an embarrassing regular-season closing home loss to South Florida.

Golden has tried to restore a bit of the swagger that the Canes used to have. The talent is there for UM to contend in the ACC but the team seemed to lose confidence at the end of last season. Golden’s biggest decision likely will be at quarterback in choosing between Jacory Harris and Stephen Morris.

UM closed the spring recently and it doesn’t appear there is a leader for the No. 1 job between Harris and Morris. Those two are listed as co-No. 1s on the post-spring depth chart. Harris and Morris each threw two interceptions in the spring game, one by Morris right into the chest of linebacker Sean Spence, who sprinted 25 yards for a touchdown.

Harris ended the day with 18 completions on 30 attempts for 149 yards, no touchdowns and the two picks. Morris completed 14 of 22 passes for 140 yards, a 23-yard touchdown to Kendal Thompkins and the two interceptions. UM quarterbacks threw an NCAA-high 27 interceptions last year.

"It's too close to call," said Golden when asked if a starter would soon be named. "We'll let them compete for the next 140 days and figure it out."

Lamar Miller rushed 10 times for 166 yards and three touchdowns in the spring game Saturday and moved ahead of Mike James on the postspring depth chart. Miller will start fall camp as the No. 1 running back. Overall Miami brings back 13 starters (six offense, seven defense, no kickers). The key loss on offense was WR Leonard Hankerson while the defense lost its two best players in end Allen Bailey and cornerback Brandon Harris. Miami is 50/1 on Bodog’s NCAA football odds to win the national championship and opens its season on Labor Day at Maryland.
