At first glance, one might think that Long Beach State would have no chance to
go into Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence, Kan, on Tuesday night – one of the
toughest places to play in the nation – and upset No. 13 Kansas. And indeed the
Jayhawks are 12-point favorites on Bodog’s NCAA basketball
odds.

But that would be to discount the Big West
Conference’s 49ers (4-3). Two of Long Beach State’s losses this season have come
on the road to very good teams who reached the NCAA Tournament last year and
could win their conference this season at San Diego State (which has won at
Arizona) and at unbeaten Louisville. And LBSU already pulled one of the nation’s
biggest surprises, winning 86-76 at then-No. 9 Pittsburgh on Nov. 16. That ended
Pitt’s 58-game home non-conference winning streak and made Long Beach State the
first non-Big East team to win at Pitt since 2005. LBSU’s Casper Ware
had 28 points in that game and he’s one of the best players in the
country you may not have heard of.
The only two losses for Kansas (5-2)
have come on neutral courts against two of the nation’s top teams in Kentucky
and Duke. Since that 7-point loss to the Dukies in Maui, KU has won two in a
row. It thrashed South Florida 70-42 last time out. KU forward Thomas
Robinson is scoring 16.1 points per game and he leads the Big 12 in
rebounds with 12.1 per game and double-doubles with six.
Tuesday's trip
to Kansas will mark Long Beach State's first trip back to Allen Fieldhouse since
Jan. 25, 1993, when the 49ers handed No. 1 Kansas a 64-49 loss. The win is
LBSU's lone victory over a team ranked No. 1 in the national rankings in 10
attempts. It was also the 49ers’ last win over a team ranked in the Top 10 until
LBSU won at No. 9 Pitt earlier this season. LBSU is 1-5 ATS in its past six road
games. KU is 1-4 ATS in past five vs. a team with a winning
record.
