Well, the NBA Finals are set. Thanks to both Dallas and Miami finishing off their conference finals series in five games, the Finals will now start Tuesday night in Miami when the Mavericks visit the Heat in a rematch from the 2006 NBA Finals. However, don’t read too much into revenge for this one. Yes, Dallas was up 2-0 in that series and seemingly on the way to a win in Game 3 before choking that game and the series away in six, but only Dirk Nowitzki and Jason Terry remain on the Dallas roster from then. For Miami, only Dwyane Wade and Udonis Haslem are back.

The Mavericks swept the two-game series with Miami in the regular season, but apparently that may not matter. Why? Boston beat Miami three of four in the regular season before the Heat dumped the Celtics in the East semis. And the Bulls won all three meetings with Miami in the regular season before dropping four straight after winning the opener in the East Finals. Clearly the Heat are peaking at the right time.

On Nov. 27 in Dallas, the Mavericks won 106-95 behind 23 points from Caron Butler, who hasn’t played in the playoffs and isn’t likely to return after suffering what was called a season-ending knee injury on New Year’s Day. The Mavs haven’t totally ruled him out, however. That loss made the Heat 9-8, probably their low point of the year, and seemed to turn their season around.

On Dec. 20 in Miami, the Mavericks won 98-96. Nowitzki scored 26 points, Terry had all of his 19 in the final 11 minutes, and the Mavericks held LeBron James scoreless in the first half on the way to ending Miami's 12-game winning streak. It was Dallas’ 14th straight regular-season win in this series. But that’s really irrelevant now. Plus the Heat are unbeaten at home in these playoffs.
