Arguably the most intriguing matchup this week in college football has to be in Morgantown, when No. 16 West Virginia, with its high-powered offense, faces No. 2 LSU and arguably the nation’s top defense. The Tigers opened as 6-point favorites on Bodog’s NCAA football odds.

ESPN College GameDay will be on hand for this prime-time affair – it’s the first time that crew has visited Morgantown. WVU (3-0) has looked brilliant on offense under new head coach Dana Holgorsen, ranking No. 7 in the nation in passing and No. 15 in scoring at 42 points a game. QB Geno Smith has looked like a legitimate Heisman candidate, throwing for 1,008 yards and seven scores with only one pick. In last week’s win over a solid Maryland team, Smith had career highs in completions (36), attempts (49) and passing yards (388).

If there are two worries about WVU it’s that the running game hasn’t gotten going, ranking just 107th in the country at 78.7 yards per game. And the Mountaineers defense has just one total sack, that coming in the season opener against Marshall. Getting a sustained pass rush against LSU is a huge key in an upset bid.

The Tigers (3-0) have already shut down ranked teams Oregon and Mississippi State this year. Last week against the Bulldogs, that defense held one of the nation’s top rushing attacks to just 52 yards in a 19-6 win. Mississippi State entered averaging 321 rushing yards a game. LSU QB Jarrett Lee, who continues to fill in for suspended Jordan Jefferson, completed 21 of 27 passes for 213 yards and a TD – more important, just one pick. He has played mostly mistake-free so far.

These two schools met for the first time last year in Baton Rouge, with LSU winning 20-14. The Tigers’ defense held West Virginia to 178 total yards. WVU’s Smith was 14-for-29 for 119 yards with two scores and a pick. But this year’s Mountaineer offense is night and day different from last year’s.
