Friday’s Champions League Round of 16 matchup between Juventus and Lyon is a complete contrast in styles, history and expectations. Juventus just clinched their ninth-straight Serie A title despite not playing their best soccer over the last month and the two-time Champions League title holders are heavily favored to make their fifth quarterfinal in the last six years. Lyon meanwhile have played one competitive match since March 8, a 0-0 contest with a penalty kick loss to Paris Saint-Germain, and haven’t made it past the Round of 16 since 2010.

Lyon took the first leg in France 1-0 on February 28 as Lucas Tousart scored in the 31st minute. These teams have met in Europe twice as Juventus eliminated Lyon from the Europa League quarterfinals in 2014. Juve also beat Lyon 1-0 in the 2017 group stage before a 1-11 draw in the second matchup.

Juventus Outlook:

The Italian champions. Cristiano Ronaldo scored 31 Serie A goals this season and tallied35 total goals in 45 games. Paulo Dybala has 17 goals this season while Gonzalo Higuain has 11. Wojciech Szczesny has allowed 41 goals in 36 games this year while posting 13 clean sheets.

No player has ever scored more Champions League goals than Ronaldo’s 128 and he has two so far this season, one less than Dybala. In his six Champions League starts this year, Szczesny has allowed five goals and posted two clean sheets. Juventus won the Champions League in 1985 and 1996 and haven’t been eliminated in the Round of 16 since 2016.

Allianz Stadium has been a fortress for Juve this season going 15-1 with two draws in league play plus 3-0 in Champions League and 2-0 with a draw in Coppa Italia. Their only home loss all season came last Saturday to Roma without Ronaldo or Juan Cuadrado in the lineup.

Olympique Lyonnais Outlook:

Lyon struggled in Ligue 1 all season as they finished seventh with 40 points on 11 wins, 10 losses and seven draws. They scored 42 goals in league play with Moussa Dembele’s 16 leading the way. Anthony Lopes allowed 25 goals in 28 league games and posted eight clean sheets.

Dutch striker Memphis Depay has five of Lyon’s 10 Champions League goals this season while four other players have scored once each. Houssem Aouar leads the way with three assists in Europe while Leo Dubois has two. Lopes allowed eight goals in the seven games with two shutouts.

Lyon has lost three straight competitive games with two of those coming against PSG plus a 1-0 league loss to Lille on March 8.  In the Champions League group stage they won on the road at RB Leipzig but lost on the road to both Benfica and Zenit St. Petersburg. Lyon have lost in this round the last four times they’ve reached the knockout stage and last progressed to the quarterfinals in 2010 when the eventually lost in the semifinals to Bayern Munich.

Juventus v. Olympique Lyonnais Betting Lines By Scoresandstats Odds

Juventus -227 to win

Lyon +556 to win

Draw +330

Over/Under 2.5 goals (O -108, U -121)

Lyon brings in a 1-0 lead and didn’t give up a crucial away goal in February but they face a tall task on Friday. Juventus is extremely tough to beat at home and Ronaldo always seems to save his best for the bright lights of Champions League play. The former Manchester United and Real Madrid star has already lifted the Champions League trophy five times and is now looking to do so in a third country.
