The unbeaten and No. 8 Houston Cougars are in the catbird’s seat to the this season’s BCS buster and reach the school’s first-ever BCS bowl, but Case Keenum and Co. face easily their biggest challenge of the season on Friday afternoon at Tulsa, with the winner to represent the West Division in the Conference USA Championship Game. The Cougars are 3.5-point favorites on Bodog’s NCAA football odds.

Behind Keenum, a likely Heisman Trophy finalist, the Cougars (11-0, 7-0) lead the nation in points (53.1) and passing yards per game (447.5). Houston actually had its second-lowest scoring game of the season last Saturday in a 37-7 win over SMU. Keenum threw for “only” 318 yards and one touchdown, also running for one. Earlier this season he had set the career TD passes, passing yardage and total offense NCAA records. And vs. SMU, Keenum completed the 1,404th pass of his career to set the completions mark. The Cougars' sixth-year quarterback also joined Hawaii's Tim Chang as the only quarterbacks to reach 4,000 yards passing in three seasons, and he tied Chang's FBS record for career 300-yard passing games (36). Houston has scored 302 points the last five weeks. That's more than 64 teams have scored all season.

Tulsa (8-3, 7-0) is no slouch – its three losses are to powerhouses Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Boise State. The Golden Hurricane have won seven in a row and their offense has totaled 116 points in the past two games. Saturday, Tulsa routed UTEP 57-28 behind 283 yards passing and three scores from G.J. Kinne. Tulsa has won its conference games this season by an average of 25.7 points, has the No. 1 rushing offense in the league and the No. 2 total offense.

The winner hosts the C-USA title game Dec. 3 against the champion from the East, likely Southern Miss. If Houston loses either this week or next, the Cougars will not get an automatic spot into the BCS. « Houston looks to avenge a 28-25 defeat to Tulsa at home last season, a game Keenum missed. Kinne had two TD throws and a scoring run in the victory. Houston looks for its 12 win on the season, which would be a school record.
