It should be an emotional afternoon on Sunday just outside Washington, D.C.
as the New York Giants visit the Washington Redskins on the
anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks that of course affected both New York
and Washington forever. The Giants have opened as 3-point favorites on Bodog’s NFL odds and there will be live betting available. There will of course be some pregame ceremonies remembering 9/11. General Colin Powell will serve as the Redskins' honorary captain, and family members affected by the attacks will be honored in a pregame ceremony. But once the game starts, it’s all football. And at this point, the Giants might not even be able to field a defense. Just this week, New York lost starting linebacker Jonathan Goff
to a season-ending ACL injury. This comes after another linebacker,
Clint Sintim, suffered a season-ending knee injury in the
preseason finale. And the list goes on for the Giants. The team also has lost
for the season cornerback Terrell Thomas (ACL), cornerback
Bruce Johnson (Achilles), cornerback Brian Witherspoon
(ACL), and defensive tackle and second-round pick Marvin Austin
(pectoral). There’s more. Defensive end Osi Umenyiora is still
recovering from arthroscopic surgery on his knee and will miss at least the
first two games. And first-round pick and cornerback Prince Amukamara
remains out with a broken foot. And last but not least, defensive end
Justin Tuck, the best player on that side of the ball and a
captain, said Thursday that he was concerned about lingering pain in his neck.
He didn’t practice yesterday and he is very iffy for Sunday. All these injuries could benefit Washington QB Rex Grossman,
who narrowly beat out journeyman John Beck for the starting job
in camp. Grossman completed 64 percent of his passes during preseason with two
touchdowns, one interception and a 92.3 rating. Grossman will be an opening day
starter for the first time since 2007, as a member of the Chicago Bears. Prior
to last season, when Grossman took over for the benched Donovan McNabb
at the end of the year, Grossman had not started a game since 2008,
also as a member of the Bears. Grossman may not have star tight end
Chris Cooley as he continues to recover from knee surgery. Washington has won its last four home openers and hasn't lost seven straight
to New York since dropping eight in a row from 1960-64. The Redskins, however,
lost their final five 2010 home games. Last season, the Giants defeated the
Redskins, 31-7, on Dec. 5 in MetLife Stadium and 17-14 in the season finale in
Washington. Bet live on Giants-Redskins on Sunday at the Web’s gaming
