Two weeks ago, tonight’s Clemson at Georgia Tech matchup looked like a potential ACC Championship Game preview. Now? The Tigers have kept up their end of the bargain and are nearly a lock to win the Atlantic Division, but the Jackets have lost two straight and are out of the Top 25. Another setback and Georgia Tech can all but kiss its Coastal Division hopes goodbye. Clemson opened as a 4.5-point favorite on Bodog’s NCAA football odds.

Clemson (8-0, 5-0) is up to No. 5 in the BCS standings and very much in the national title hunt if it can win out. The Tigers have put up a whopping 115 combined points the past two weeks, although they also have allowed 83 combined in wins over Maryland and North Carolina. Last week against the Heels, QB Tajh Boyd threw for 367 yards and tied a school record with five touchdown passes as the Tigers improved to 8-0 for the first time in 11 years with a 59-38 victory. Freshman star WR Sammy Watkins had another nice game, catching eight passes for 91 yards and a score. RB Andre Ellington suffered a left ankle sprain and didn’t do much vs. UNC but will play in this one.

Beware: The last time Clemson started 8-0, in 2000, the Tigers also beat UNC to reach 8-0 before losing to Georgia Tech the next week.

The Yellow Jackets (6-2, 3-2) are a half-game behind Virginia Tech in the Coastal Division. Their option offense was unstoppable for a while but has gone into neutral in this two-game skid. In last week’s 24-7 loss at Miami, Tech was held to just 134 yards rushing and 211 yards overall, their lowest total since the Orange Bowl following the 2009 season. That was also 306 below what the Jackets had been averaging entering last week. Tech just has no threat of a passing game, with QB Tevin Washington going just 6-for-12 for 63 yards and a pick against Miami.

Last season when these two met, Clemson scored the first 17 points of the game en route to a 27-13 win that ended the Tigers' four-game losing streak to Georgia Tech. Ellington ran for 166 yards, then a career high, with touchdown runs of 55 and 42 yards. In this series, however, 14 of the past 16 games have been decided by an average of just 4.6 points. The schools’ combined 14-2 record is the best they have brought into a game during their time in the ACC.
