The consensus two best teams in college football will get a chance to prove their worth on the field this Saturday night (8:00 pm Eastern, CBS) when the No. 1 LSU Tigers head to Tuscaloosa to take on the No. 2 Alabama Crimson Tide in one of the biggest regular-season games to come along in college football betting action in years.

BCS battle in November

With the Tigers and Tide virtually unanimous picks as No. 1 and No. 2 respectively in every poll in the land, it's almost a foregone conclusion that the winner of this game will eventually appear in the BCS Championship Game at the Louisiana Superdome on January 9, 2012.

In fact many observers of the college football betting scene would argue that this huge matchup of SEC powerhouses will be the toughest test of the entire season for both teams, and it's hard to argue otherwise.

Alabama (8-0 SU, 7-1 ATS) has won every game on their schedule by at least 16 points, scoring at a clip of 39.4 points per game this season while giving up the fewest points in the nation at just 6.9 points per game.

LSU (8-0 SU, 6-2 ATS) has won all of their games by at least 13 points, while scoring 39.3 points per game and giving up just 11.5 points each time out to rank third overall in the Division 1 FBS.

Alabama handed Arkansas and Penn State their only losses of the season to this point, while LSU has posted big wins over Oregon and West Virginia. Tack on the fact that the last four games between these two teams have been evenly split with two wins apiece, and all four matchups have been decided by nine points or less, and there's no question that this game has the potential to actually live up to all the hype.

Richardson ready to run

There's no question that we're going to see some great defense between these two teams, with two of the top three shutdown units in college football betting results hitting the field. The key to victory will lie in which offensive stars are able to penetrate and perform, and which team can protect the football.

The Alabama attack includes more rushing yards per game (229.3) than LSU (189), and the Crimson Tide has also recorded more passing yards per game (228.4) than the Tigers (183.1). But LSU boasts a turnover margin of +15, which compares favorably to Alabama's rate of +6.

Crimson Tide RB Trent Richardson will likely be the best offensive player on the field this Saturday night. With 989 rushing yards (and a per-carry average of 6.6 yards) plus 17 touchdowns already in the books this season, Richardson has been Alabama's key offensive weapon. A solid day from Richardson could not only be a difference-maker for the Tide, but could also boost his personal chances of winning the Heisman Trophy with all eyes focused on this game.

Tigers QB Jarrett Lee has been a pleasant surprise this season, stepping in for the suspended Jordan Jefferson prior to Week 1 and helping Louisiana State get off on the right foot and keep rolling along. Lee hasn't been asked to throw much, but he's done a perfect job managing games with 1,250 yards passing and a glittering 13-to-1 touchdown-to-interception ratio.

With Jefferson also available after returning to the fold on October 1, LSU has two battle-tested quarterbacks ready to go; and at hostile Bryant-Denny Stadium the Tigers might need big plays from both pivots in order to pull off the win.

Top-ranked Tigers are underdogs

Despite being the No. 2-ranked team in this matchup, the Crimson Tide are currently sitting as a 5-point favorite on the college football betting lines at Bodog Sportsbook. Home-field advantage figures to be a strong factor in a game of this magnitude, as it was last year when the Tigers hosted Alabama as a 7-point underdog at home and beat the Tide outright 24-21.

While LSU is 4-1 SU in its past five meetings with the Tide at Alabama, they came up short the last time in a 24-15 result in November 2009. More notably, two of those four wins came with current Alabama coach Nick Saban at the helm of the Tigers.
