Texas got its 2011 college football betting season off to a good start last week and will look to continue its early momentum as Brigham Young comes to town to take on the Longhorns this Saturday night (7:00 pm Eastern, ESPN2).

Texas (1-0 SU, 1-0 ATS) successfully covered a huge 23.5-point spread last week at home with a strong second half in a 34-9 victory over Rice. Junior QB Garrett Gilbert completed 13-of-23 pass attempts for 239 yards and one touchdown, while managing to avoid throwing any interceptions after getting picked off 17 times last season. Sophomore WR Mike Davis hauled in three receptions for 115 yards, while freshman RB Malcolm Brown rushed for 86 yards on 16 carries in his debut.

BYU (1-0 SU, 0-1 ATS) managed to eke out a 14-13 Week 1 win on the road against Ole Miss, as the Cougars scored all their points in the fourth quarter to erase a 13-0 deficit and stun the Rebels. Linebacker Kyle Van Noy fell on a fumble by Mississippi QB Zack Stoudt in the end zone to provide the winning margin, while BYU pivot Jake Heaps persevered to throw for 225 yards in completing 24-of-38 passing attempts with one touchdown and one pick.

Heaps, a sophomore, hit freshman WR Ross Apo for a 19-yard major with less than 10 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter to spark the comeback. Apo finished with four receptions for 46 yards, while senior RB JJ Di Luigi added 56 yards rushing on 12 carries and also caught five balls for another 32 yards.

BYU left the Mountain West Conference and will play as an Independent this season, although there are rumblings the Cougars may look to join No. 24-ranked Texas in the Big 12 – which has only ten teams this year after the departures of Nebraska and Colorado – as early as next year.
