Texas coach Mack Brown has finally pulled the plug on
struggling starting quarterback Garrett Gilbert, with both
Case McCoy and David Ash to get the snaps
under center starting with Saturday’s game at UCLA. The No. 23 Longhorns are 4-point favorites on Bodog’s NCAA football odds. After two interceptions last week, Gilbert, who also struggled mightily as the starter last season, was pulled at halftime against Brigham Young with the Longhorns trailing 13-3. McCoy, the brother of UT legend Colt McCoy, saw most of the action under center in the second half vs. the Cougars with some help from Ash. Texas (2-0) rallied for a 17-16 victory on a fourth-quarter drive led by McCoy. He had the best passing stats of the three players against the Cougars. McCoy was 7-of-8
for 57 yards, while Ash was 2-of-3 for 35 yards, and ran for 36 yards on nine carries. McCoy is expected to get the start and get the most snaps but Ash will play. Gilbert is now third-string. UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel is on the major hot season this
season, so beating the Horns for the second year in a row would be huge for him.
The Bruins opened their season getting pounded at Houston before beating a bad
San Jose State team just 27-17 last week. UCLA QB Richard Brehaut
completed 12 of 23 passes for 145 yards and one touchdown for the
Bruins, who were pushed to the limit for three quarters by the 21-point underdog
Spartans. Brehaut played because usual UCLA starter Kevin Prince was
out after suffering a concussion in the Houston loss. It is thought that Prince
will start this week but Neuheisel hasn’t officially said yet. Last season UCLA went into Austin and stunned Texas 34-12 with the Bruins
gashing UT for 264 rushing yards on 56 carries. That game started a
season-ending 2-7 slide for Texas. Get the best NCAA football odds and props all season at the Web’s gaming
