What a difference Cam Newton makes. While the No. 1 overall draft pick is currently turning heads at his first NFL training camp with the Carolina Panthers, the Auburn Tigers will enter the upcoming NCAA Division 1 Football Bowl Subdivision season as lightly-regarded defending BCS champions.

The Tigers are currently listed as a longshot at 100/1 on the college football betting futures odds to win the 2011-12 BCS championship.

Sooners set as the chalk

Newton and the Tigers completed a perfect season (14-0) last year by knocking off the Oregon Ducks 22-19 in the BCS Championship Game on January 10 in Glendale, Arizona. It was their second national title - including their 1957 crown when they were named the champions by the Associated Press.

This year it's star quarterback Landry Jones and the perennially competitive Oklahoma Sooners sitting at the top of the futures board however, with 9/2 odds to win their eighth national championship next January at the Louisiana Superdome.

The Sooners are coming off a solid 12-2 season that concluded with a 48-20 victory over an overmatched Connecticut Huskies squad in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. Jones is considered a strong candidate to win the Heisman Trophy entering this season, with fellow returnees WR Ryan Broyles and LB Travis Lewis also expected to shine as the Sooners take dead aim at national title.

Oklahoma will face stiff challenges on their 2011 college football betting schedule at Florida State and also on the road against Big 12 rival Oklahoma State.

Four more threats to follow

Those Florida State Seminoles look like a strong threat to come out of the ACC this season, with 10/1 odds to win the BCS Championship. And the Alabama Crimson Tide, a powerhouse from the SEC that won their 13th national title in 2009-10, are listed second behind the Sooners and just ahead of the Seminoles at 11/2 on the college football odds.

Alabama finished up at 10-3 overall last season, losing on the road to South Carolina and LSU as well as dropping the Iron Bowl game at home to Auburn 28-27. The Tide rebounded however to destroy Michigan State 49-7 in the Capital One Bowl. A rock-solid defense and the emergence of RB Trent Richardson this season could easily make Alabama the No. 1 team in the nation.

In addition to hosting the Sooners, Florida State will also face a tough test at The Swamp when they square off against the Florida Gators on November 26. If new QB E.J. Manuel can capably fill the shoes of the departed Christian Ponder the sky is the limit for the Seminoles who finished at 10-4 last season and won the Chick-fil-A Bowl 26-17 over South Carolina.

Another SEC threat should emerge from the campus of LSU, where the Tigers are coming off an 11-2 season and a 41-24 rout of Texas A&M in the Cotton Bowl. LSU is listed at 12/1 odds on the  college football betting futures market and open the season with a critical matchup September 3 at home to Oregon.

The Ducks are expected to win the Pac-12, after going 12-0 last year before falling to Auburn in the BCS Championship Game. Oregon boasts a Heisman candidate in returning RB LaMichael James and are listed at 14/1 odds to finish the job this season.

Looking down the ladder

If the topsy-turvy polls and shocking upsets of last season teach us anything it's that you should expect the unexpected on those crisp autumn Saturdays when the college football betting scene features live dogs biting big favorites right in the wallet.

Boise State (14/1 odds) is in the Mountain West and looking for real respect with senior QB Kellen Moore back in the saddle for more success. The always-dangerous Gators are not to be overlooked at 18/1 odds, along with the Wisconsin Badgers (also 18/1) and their transfer pivot Russell Wilson.

Stanford (20/1) lost coach Jim Harbaugh to the NFL but QB Andrew Luck returns to take another run at Oregon in the Pac-12, and they get the Ducks at home this year. Taylor Martinez and the Nebraska Cornhuskers (22/1) will give Wisconsin all they can handle in the Big Ten.

Finally, storied Notre Dame (22/1) won eight games, beat USC, and won a bowl game in its first season under coach Brian Kelly. Star LB Manti Te'o is an impact player, and a huge test comes early on September 10 at rival Michigan.
