I would like to tell you that Friday night’s ESPN2 game between Central Michigan and Kent State has some sort of significance in the Mid-American Conference, but that would be a lie. But, this is one of only two NCAA football games on Friday night and you can bet on it, so that’s probably good enough reason to preview this one. The Flashes opened as 1-point favorites on Bodog’s college football odds.

Central Michigan (3-6, 2-3 MAC) used to be the powerhouse of the MAC but hasn’t been the same since record-setting QB Dan LeFevour graduated two seasons ago as the Chips are in the MAC West basement. They almost had an embarrassing loss at Akron, arguably the worst team in NCAA football, on Saturday. CMU led 23-9 with just over three minutes remaining but allowed Akron to score two touchdowns. However, the Zips went for two on the second one, with time expired, and failed on the conversion as CMW won 23-22. That ended a three-game losing streak.

If Kent State (2-6, 1-3) isn’t the worst offensive team in the nation, I don’t know which is. The Flashes rank No. 117 in passing yards and rushing yards and No. 119 in scoring at 12.8 per game. They have scored more than 12 points twice this season, although one came Saturday in a 27-14 win over Bowling Green, which ended a three-game losing streak. Kent State does have a solid defense led by end Roosevelt Nix, who last season became the first freshman to win MAC Defensive Player of the Year.

CMU has won 12 of the past 14 meetings against Kent State but the teams haven’t met since 2007. The Chips are also 9-1 in their past 10 games in Ohio.  However, CMU is 0-7 ATS in its past seven road games overall. KSU is 1-4 ATS in its past five as a home favorite.
