This week’s NCAA Friday night game features two clubs in Central Florida and Brigham Young coming off embarrassing losses, albeit for different reasons. Host BYU opened as a field goal favorite on Bodog’s NCAA football odds.

The Cougars were blown off the field by Utah on Saturday, 54-10, in the Holy War. BYU, in its first season as an independent in football, committed a whopping seven turnovers. It actually was a close game at the half, with BYU only down 14-10. Cougars QB Jake Heaps passed for 305 yards and a 32-yard second-quarter TD, but tossed an interception and fumbled twice. BYU's run game was non-existent as the Cougars carried 22 times for just 11 yards. The Cougars rank 118th in the nation in rushing offense. They had negative rushing yardage in three of the four quarters vs. Utah.

Certainly you have to wonder about that BYU defense as the Cougars were outscored, 40-0, in the second half and surrendered 481 yards of total offense to a Utes team that had scored three offensive touchdowns all season entering the game. This marks the fifth time in seven years under head coach Bronco Mendenhall that the Cougars have started with a 1-2 record.

UCF (2-1) was again supposed to be one of the best teams in Conference USA but didn’t look good in last week’s 17-10 loss to Florida International. Knights QB Jeffrey Godfrey was 17 of 27 for 181 yards. He also rushed 18 times for 25 yards and had UCF's lone touchdown. Central Florida had 10 penalties and two turnovers to FIU’s none. UCF leads the nation in passing defense (93.67 yards allowed per game), is third in scoring defense and leads Conference USA in five defensive categories (pass efficiency, rushing, passing, scoring, pass and total).
