Both South Carolina and Nebraska are making their fourth straight bowl
appearance this season but it’s the first visit for both schools to the Capital
One Bowl in Orlando as the Gamecocks and Cornhuskers play for the first time
since 1987 and first-ever time in the postseason. South Carolina is a 3-point
favorite on Bovada’s NCAA football betting odds.

No. 20 Nebraska (9-3) was one of the preseason
favorites in the Big Ten but finished third in the Legends Division. South
Carolina will be the fifth ranked team that Nebraska has faced, with the Huskers
going 2-2 in the other four (wins vs. Michigan State and Penn State. A victory
would give Nebraska its third consecutive 10-win season, something the Huskers
haven’t done since 1999-2001. Behind dual-threat QB Taylor Martinez
and tailback Rex Burkhead, Nebraska ranks 13th in the
nation at 223.9 yards per game.
There are two key player notes to be
aware of for the Huskers regarding off the field issues. Starting center
Mike Caputo will play after a drunken driving charge against
him was reduced. Caputo has started every game the past two seasons and was a
second-team All-Big Ten selection this year. Defensive end Eric Martin
also will play; he was ticketed for leaving the scene of an
accident.
No. 9 South Carolina (10-2) reached the SEC title game a
season ago but things didn’t break as well this season, with starting QB
Stephen Garcia getting kicked off the team during the season
and superstar running back Marcus Lattimore going down with a
season-ending injury. He missed the final five games. USC did close well,
winning three in a row and six of seven. It was very impressive in the
regular-season finale, blowing out ACC champion Clemson.
The Gamecocks
have a terrific defense, ranking No. 2 in the nation against the pass, No. 4 in
total defense and No. 13 in scoring – USC gave up more than 13 points only twice
in its final nine contests. However, South Carolina has lost four of its past
five bowl games (1-4 ATS), including their past three. They’re just 4-12 all
time in bowls. Nebraska is 4-1 ATS in its past five neutral-site
games.
