Utah (1-1) enters off a loss in its Pac-12 opener to USC, 23-14 in a game that had some bettors screaming because that final USC touchdown wasn’t counted until a few hours after the game – the Trojans were -8. USC's Matt Kalil blocked Utah's 41-yard field goal attempt on the final play and Torin Harris returned it for a touchdown but because of some rule confusion that wasn’t counted until two hours after the game ended. Utes QB Jordan Wynn was 23-for-46 for 238 yards with a TD and no picks.

The Cougars might be the only team to have played two 1-point games so far. They beat Ole Miss 14-13 in their opener but then fell 17-16 at Texas last week. BYU squandered a 13-0 lead against the Horns after rallying from 13 points down in the fourth quarter to beat Mississippi. Jake Heaps led BYU against UT with 235 yards passing with one touchdown and two interceptions.

BYU and Utah are playing as non-conference opponents for the first time ever. This is the earliest in a season they have ever met. Under head coach Bronco Mendenhall, BYU is 3-3 against Utah. BYU is currently on a four-game home win streak and has not lost to an in-state school at home since against Utah in 2005. Last year at Utah, the Utes won 17-16 thanks to a blocked field goal in the final seconds. It was the 12th time in the last 14 meetings the matchup has been decided by seven points or fewer.
