It’s never easy for any team to travel all the way across the country to play a game, but it’s hard to see how No. 6 Stanford would have much trouble at Duke on Saturday. The Cardinal have opened as 21.5-point favorites on Bodog’s NCAA football odds.

Stanford, which is now the Pac-12 favorite after the way Oregon looked in its opener, had an easy time of it in its opener, crushing a bad San Jose State team 57-3. QB Andrew Luck, the early Heisman front-runner, didn’t put up huge numbers because he simply didn’t need to. He completed 17 of 26 passes for 171 yards and two TDs and added a rushing score in Stanford’s first game under new coach David Shaw; he was the offensive coordinator last year under the departed Jim Harbaugh. Luck and most of Stanford’s starters didn’t even play the fourth quarter last week.

Duke, meanwhile, has one of college football’s most respected coaches in David Cutcliffe and it appears he has things pointed in the right direction. But the Blue Devils were simply embarrassed at home last week by FCS team Richmond, losing 23-21 to the Spiders.

Will Snyderwine missed a 28-yard field-goal attempt that would have given Duke the lead with 1:43 remaining. And, after forcing a punt on Richmond's last possession, his 60-yard kick on the final play of the game also came up short. Duke QB Sean Renfree considered one of the ACC’s best was 23 of 33 for 201 yards and no scores. An FCS team has beaten an FBS team five times in each of the past two years and it happened twice last weekend (Oregon State the other to fall). Maybe it wasn’t a surprise considering Richmond also beat Duke in 2006 and ’09.

This is the first time these two academic powers meet on the football field since 1972. Stanford has won nine straight games dating back to last season, marking the program's longest winning streak since 1951.
