The Clemson Tigers went into Blacksburg, Va., and thumped Virginia Tech 23-3 earlier this season, yet it’s the Hokies who are 7-point favorites on Bodog’s NCAA football odds for Saturday night’s ACC Championship Game rematch in Charlotte. So what gives?

No. 20 Clemson (9-3), the ACC Atlantic Division champ, hasn’t been the same club for a while and enters having lost two in a row and three of its past four games. And that single victory -- by three at home over Wake Forest -- required a recovery from a 14-point deficit. The three losses weren’t pretty, with all by at least two touchdowns and the past two by a combined 45 points. In that four-game stretch, Clemson has committed 12 turnovers compared to six in winning its first eight games.

Last week against state rival South Carolina, the Tigers were little match in a 34-13 loss. Clemson’s offense, which looked like the best in the ACC most of the season, managed only 70 rushing yards and 153 total. QB Tajh Boyd struggled big time, completing 11 of 29 passes for only 89 yards. And ACC Freshman of the Year Sammy Watkins had a quiet four catches for 39 yards. In the first eight games, Boyd threw 24 touchdowns and just three interceptions, but he has thrown four touchdowns and seven interceptions in Clemson’s last four games.

No. 5 Virginia Tech (11-1) has won seven in a row since that lone loss to the Tigers. In that stretch, QB Logan Thomas has been a different player, throwing for 14 touchdowns and just two interceptions, while also adding nine rushing touchdowns. Plus the Hokies have the ACC’s top rusher David Wilson, who is No. 3 in the country with 1,595 yards.

In that Oct. 1 loss to Clemson, Virginia Tech was held to a season-low 258 total yards. The three points by Virginia Tech were its second fewest points in a home game since Frank Beamer took over the program in 1987 and first time Tech was held without a TD at home since 1995. It also ended the Hokies’ 12-game ACC winning streak and was their second-worst home loss in the past 30 seasons.

The winner of this game is headed to the Orange Bowl. Clemson is 1-6 ATS in its past seven neutral-site game. Hokies are 4-0 ATS in past four December games. Tech had covered the previous five meetings vs. Clemson before that October loss.
