It’s almost to the point that Kentucky coach John Calipari is being unfair to the rest of college basketball with the types of freshman classes that Coach Cal is luring to Lexington. He has restored Kentucky to one of the nation’s top five programs and this year’s freshman class could be his best ever and has UK poised to return to the Final Four for the second straight year. Can the Cats win their first title under Calipari? They are the second-favorites on Bodog’s NCAA basketball odds at 9/2.

The Wildcats did lose some talent in Brandon Knight (the team’s leading scorer and passer), DeAndre Liggins and Josh Harrellson (the main frontcourt player), three guys who were key cogs to UK (29-9, 10-6 SEC) winning the SEC Tournament and reaching the Final Four before falling to eventual national champion Connecticut. But unlike the past two years, the latest version of the Wildcats has a decent amount of experience to blend with its youth. Terrence Jones decided against entering the NBA draft and was one of the top two players on last year’s squad, while Darius Miller and Doron Lamb played key roles as well.

Kentucky's incoming class is easily No. 1 in the country with four Top 20 nationally-ranked players in Anthony Davis, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Marquis Teague and Kyle Wiltjer. Davis is likely the best of the bunch, a player some believe could blossom into the No. 1 overall pick in the 2012 NBA draft. The 6-foot-10 Davis could start right away in Harrellson’s spot. This year’s UK team should be much deeper than last year’s version.

The Wildcats have advanced farther in each of Coach Cal’s two seasons in Lexington: from Elite Eight two seasons ago to last season’s national semifinals loss. UK opens its season Nov. 11 vs. Marist and then has a terrific early-season matchup with Kansas on Nov. 15.
