At most schools, winning your conference tournament and reaching the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament would be considered a very successful season. But then again most schools aren’t Duke. The Blue Devils began last year as the odds-on favorite to repeat as national champions and as the preseason No. 1 team in the land.

So while winning the ACC Tournament was nice, especially beating rival UNC in the final, the Blue Devils (32-5, 13-3 ACC) were stunned by Arizona in the NCAAs, thus making the season a disappointment. Can Coach Mike Krzyzewski get Duke back to the mountaintop and win the program’s fifth national title? The Devils opened at 9/1 on Bodog’s NCAA basketball odds.

Coach K may have his work cut out for him as Duke returns no players who averaged double-digit points last year. Team anchors and seniors Nolan Smith (last season’s ACC MVP) and Kyle Singler (the 2010 Final Four MOP) have moved on, as did superstar freshman point guard Kyrie Irving, who played in only 12 games last year due to injury. Three starters are back: forwards Mason Plumlee and Ryan Kelly and guard Seth Curry (Curry started when Irving was out). In addition, key contributor Andre Dawkins also returns.

But the biggest star on next year’s team could well be superstar freshman guard Austin Rivers, the son of Celtics coach Doc Rivers and considered by many the No. 1 overall recruit in the land. With Rivers, fellow Top 20 recruit Quinn Cook, Curry and Dawkins, Duke should be just fine in the backcourt. Down low, Kelly was the team’s best player on a trip overseas this summer and the Dukies have two other Plumlees to help bang down low: senior Miles and freshman Mason.

Long story short: This team is as potentially as talented as any recent Duke team but will have to find a leader – i.e. who is the point guard? – and develop some chemistry. But as usual Duke will be in the hunt to cut the nets down in April.
