Maybe Connecticut is used to getting no respect by this point. After all, no one expected last year’s Huskies to win the Big East Tournament as they entered that limping. Shoot, UConn wasn’t even a lock at-large NCAA Tournament team. But led by an incredible performance by Kemba Walker, the Huskies swept through the Big East and then the NCAA bracket to win the school’s second national title. It’s nearly impossible to repeat in college hoops these days, and UConn is at 12/1 to do so on Bodog’s NCAA basketball futures odds.

Yes, the Huskies lost Walker, the Final Four MOP, to the NBA. But other than Walker, this team also relied heavily on three freshmen in their title run in Shabazz Napier, Jeremy Lamb and Roscoe Smith. All three are back and Lamb looks poised to take the next step to superstardom. He took over in the second half of the title game against Butler and was the star of this summer’s United States team in the FIBA Under-19 World Championships. And of course Hall of Fame coach Jim Calhoun returns despite some rumors he might retire.

Yet UConn’s biggest addition likely will be freshman Andre Drummond. He was ranked as the top big man in the Class of 2012 – that’s 2012 not 2011. But Drummond is passing a post graduate year of prep school and enroll at Connecticut this fall. Drummond gives the Huskies a true big man, shot blocker to go with returning rotation players Smith, Lamb, Napier and Alex Oriakhi. UConn has also brought in two other potential impact recruits– forward DeAndre Daniels and guard Ryan Boatright (Boatright’s eligibility is in question). Drummond hasn’t said officially why he suddenly changed his mind to go to college rather than prep school for another year. He is considered the top recruit to ever commit to UConn and that’s saying something.

UConn opens its season Nov. 11 against Columbia.
